We are officially in February and operation “Metro Surge” shows no sign of slowing down. The good news is

neither are any of the citizens of the Twin Cities. We had our caucus last night and the turnout was so large that there was a line out the door at my local caucus location. I’m not worried for the future of Minnesota because we have the community, and social awareness to persevere into the future. I’m worried about the fate of America and the future our federal government may not have. It’s easy to give into apathy and just watch the entire system burn down, but I want to be better than that. In order to move forward as a nation we as a people need to discuss the issue of White Supremacy. White Supremacy is a gross ideology that views “White people” as the superior race and the rightful rulers of America. The ideology stems from America’s racially charged slave trade and labor that was used to build this country.

To be “White” in the United States is simply to have a fair complexion. These are people, usually with European ancestors, that have privilege or in other words are seen and given the benefit of the doubt by most people in society. Not all White people are aware of this privilege and it can be hard to realize it’s there until you see it first hand. Just because you don’t see it or believe it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. Take for example the studies that show time and time again that a White person has a higher chance for employment than a person of color, the same studies that find a White person with a past felony is just as likely as a Black person with no criminal past to get a job. Ex. Study: Bertrand Marianne, Mullainathan Sendhil. Are Emily and Greg more employable than Lakisha and Jamal? A field experiment on labor market discrimination. The American Economic Review. 2004;94:991–1013. White Supremacy comes from the refusal of these very real statistics and is a generational ideology that was never properly stamped out since the American civil war.

The Ku Klux Klan may seem like a fable of yesteryear or a tale from our past but it is still alive and active today. The Nazi party based their racial profiling techniques off of McCarthyism and other US segregation laws. The Proud Boys are just the latest iteration of this disgusting inhuman filth and are rightfully called Neo-Nazis. The first amendment allows for the freedom of speech, except for acts or threats of violence, I bring this up because many try to use it to justify their hateful speech and it isn’t legally protected. They are crafty and are sure to use specific words so they cannot outright be called out for their speech but a boot to the neck silences anyone. Donald Trump may not be a White Supremacist but he is more than happy to have their support and give them a platform to spread their disgusting messages. Remember when the US Coastguard attempted to remove Swastikas from the offense and outlawed symbols last year? Steve Bannon and Stephen Miller are White Supremacists that have been the devils on Trump's shoulder for years and they have yet to be held accountable for any of their actions.

We need to acknowledge our faults as a nation if we are to move forward as something better. We can’t continue to sweep our dark history under the rug if we are to progress as a people. I’m not writing this to shame anyone who doesn’t acknowledge their privilege, I write this to educate and give you a stepping stone to getting further informed and start taking steps to being better. I also have my faults and my own battles with guilt but it doesn’t stop me from knowing what’s right. For those of you who have chosen White Supremacy, have fun in your ignorance. You have a moment of power and the masses are against you, so reveal in it for the short amount of time you have left because every bigot will get their comeuppance if I have anything to say about it.
